Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The cultural shorthand has flattened the original, which is more interesting than the meme. The argument is not that we have a good self and a bad self. It is that the act of separating them is itself the dangerous move. Much of the book is really about respectability, and the lengths a respectable life will go to in order to keep the other parts of itself out of view.
